Large Turnout for Hol-Mac Job Fair

Hundreds turned out Friday hoping to land a good-paying job at Hol-Mac Corporation. The line of people stretched outside the door at Bay Springs City Hall, where the fair was held. The demand for jobs is high.

"I've been looking for a job. About three or four years. I need a job bad," said Kenny Newell.

Turnout is estimated to have more than doubled last year's. Many, like Stephen Bolton, from Newton, traveled from other cities seeking a job.

"It's only 30 miles. I was working for the Toyota plant in Columbus, which was 90 miles," said Bolton. "So, this is nothing."

''We recently expanded on our Plant One facility," said Kellum Kim, Hol-Mac's P.R. director. "We've added about an additional 80,000 square feet. Today we're well over 500,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Bay Springs, which is huge for us here."

That's good news for the hundreds of people who are looking for work.

"I've been looking for quite a while, but I know this is the last stop and I'm going to get a job today," said Gwendolyn Wilson.

Hol-Mac officials say they plan to hire at least 50 people immediately. Within the next three months they plan on hiring 90 people total.

The jobs are considered to be high paying. In fact, officials say at least 80% of them pay anywhere between $38,000 and $50,000 a year.

"Tremendous growth foreseen in the future with our cylinder production and Caterpillar heavy fabrication production," Kim said. "It's just phenomenal. So, we need those skilled labor positions to accommodate that growth."

Newell said he has tried to get training during the time he has been out of work. He's hopeful it will pay off now.

Hol-Mac is based in Bay Springs. It's a steel fabricator for original equipment manufacturers. Some of the positions to be filled are: welders, machinists, manufacturing engineers, paint engineers and package engineers.
