Lauderdale County Man Wanted for Murder in Alabama

Lauderdale County, Miss. Local authorities are searching for a Lauderdale County man wanted on murder charges in Alabama.

Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun has been in close contact with the Randolph County, Alabama Sheriff's Department as the two agencies work together to track down 34-year old Steven Ladel Johnson. Calhoun says Johnson is wanted in Randolph County on one count of murder, as well as two counts of assault in the first degree and one count of assault in the third degree. Deputies say these charges stem from a fatal head-on crash last year.

"When he was operating a commercial vehicle," Calhoun recounts. "I believe it was an 18-wheeler, which was involved in a multi-vehicle crash.

Calhoun tells Newscenter 11 one woman died in that crash. He says evidence submitted to the crime lab led to the charges against Johnson. The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department has spoken to members of Johnson's family here, but deputies say family members were not able to provide investigators with any clues. Calhoun says the best thing Johnson can do is own up to the charges.

"Well there's one thing for sure, it's not going away anytime soon," Calhoun maintains. "The best course of action would be to turn himself in."

Of course, aiding and abetting is also a crime, which is why Calhoun says anyone who might be helping Johnson run from the law should think twice about doing so.

"Where they hide them in some way or aide them in fleeing from law enforcement, they can be charged with that," Calhoun points out.

So far, no one has come forward with information about Johnson's whereabouts. If you have information that can help investigators, you are asked to call Crimestoppers at 601-485-1860. You could be eligible for a cash reward.
