Library Gets Thorough Inventory

Some major changes are going on at the Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library. It's an overhaul unlike anything that has ever been done there.

The library has been closed for the last two days, as employees and representatives of the Mississippi Library Commission have been going through its contents with a fine tooth comb.

The plan is to get rid of a lot of rarely read, out of date, and damaged books. Some of them have been in the library for more than fifty years.

"This won't be a yearly process, but it will be an ongoing process," said library director Steve McCartney. "We'll be monitoring more closely the books that are on the shelf, their condition. And as books come in and the information becomes dated, and new information becomes available, we'll be replacing old books with new books."

The work is expected to continue through Wednesday. The library should reopen Thursday.
