Local Church Assists with Tornado Recovery

Members of Northcrest Baptist Church in Meridian spent Wednesday evening collecting all sorts of supplies that residents in Hattiesburg can use to begin the rebuilding process.

Paper towels, garbage bags, and cleaning supplies will certainly be appreciated by those hit hardest by Sunday's night's powerful EF-4 tornado that left parts of Hattiesburg in ruins. A lot of people only had enough time to get to a safe spot and couldn't protect their belongings.

"If we could help with the clean up or if we can just feed people," Heather Mason says. "Whatever we can get."

Members of the church say it was God that led them to do this. They say they contacted some friends in Hattiesburg and then things came together really easily. That led to Wednesday night's drop off at the Northcrest gym where members of the community were able to drop off items that will come in handy.

"I've been on the other side of a situation like this," Mason points out "And to see the outpouring was amazing. And this time, I get to be on the side where I get to help."

Members of the church will be driving the items to Hattiesburg and tell Newscenter 11 they can't wait to see them in the hands of those who need them most. The church hopes it will be able to meet the needs of as many people as possible.
