In the last month gas prices rose more than 50 cents, hitting record highs for this time of year.
According to the Natural Resource's Defense Council an economy held hostage to global instability and an oil industry monopoly on our transportation system. Right now, the average U.S. Household buys more than 1,100 gallons of gas per year. At $4 per gallon, that means the average household spends $4,400 per year just on gasoline. Mississippi is feeling the pain of the increase of higher gas prices and is affecting small businesses,families,and the everyday working person.
"Self employed and doing whatever I can to try to make it," Meridian resident John Temple says. "Honestly, but uh basically it, well it's like everybody else, you know, you have less to spend, you know, that's it."
"Outrageous," Bailey resident L.C. Hudnall says. "And i dont like this ethanol in this gas. This station here was free of ethanol up until about Christmas time and you get about a mile or two per gallon out of the regular gas with no ethanol."
Experts say relief could be on the way once refinery upgrades are complete.
