Recent shootings in Meridian apparently have more people looking to buy guns for self-protection.
Gun dealers in Meridian say their sales of handguns are up about 15 percent from this same time in 2011, as more people want to make sure that they can protect their families and their property.
"Sales this year are up some," said C.W. Garrett of Garrett Sporting Goods. "You know, we have hunting season fixing to start the first weekend in September. So that's kind of got things boosted a little bit. People are worried about crime, so handgun sales are up too."
"Pretty much through the roof across the board for everything," said Jonathan DeBord of Modern Outfitters. "We cater to the home defense, self-defense and tactical weapons market. And what we are seeing a lot of the people that are concerned with their safety. Obviously, they perceive that the crime rate's growing in Meridian."
Gun dealers say in order to purchase a firearm, you must fill out the necessary paperwork.
"We have to run a NICS check through the FBI which we do online, which tells us whether they're approved or not approved to buy the weapon," said DeBord. "It really is a painless process as long as you're not a convicted felon, or fugitive or anything like that."
Mississippi already has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the country.
