MCC Enrollment

So far, four thousand students are enrolled at Meridian Community College for the fall semester. This number holds steady with last year's record enrollment. With registration continuing throughout the week, that number is expected to continue to swell. Of the students enrolled, at least 2,600 are signed up to take classes on-line.

Soraya Welden is the Dean for Student Services at MCC. She says one key change for this year is the addition of an honors program for students who qualify.

' They have an honors class that's designated within their schedule, as well as an honors forum where they will have guest speakers come in as well as a community service component,' says Welden.

In an effort to meet the direct, immediate needs of people in this area, Meridian Community College is equipping its Workforce Training Division with a new edition.

'It's a paramedic program where you have to options,' says Welden. 'One option is for a one year certificate where you go fall, spring and summer and will have a certificate and begin work or continue on and receive your associates degree.'

'We have fifty career/technical program options now at MCC,' says MCC president, Dr. Scott Elliott. 'We are seeing about 90% of our students complete these programs and be what we call positively placed. They get a job; they continue their education, perhaps at a university; go into the military or something like that and that's a pretty good record.'

Given the large size of the healthcare industry and military presence in this area, Dr. Elliott says MCC is focusing a great deal of its attention on meeting the demands for those sectors.
