Meridian, Miss. A Meridian High School student is giving back to the community in a big way.
Madeline Griffin met Wednesday with the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi.
The senior unveiled a fundraising campaign she is calling Catch the Bus.
Griffin is spearheading an effort to raise $70,000 to help the Boys and Girls Club purchase a new bus to provide safe and reliable transportation for the children it serves.
"What that will do is give a lot of children an opportunity they don't get to participate in programs that normally they would get a chance to participate in," said executive director Ricky Hood. "But I'm proud of her more so for just putting up the effort to think about someone other than herself. She's setting an example for all the young people around town, and that for me is amazing."
The Catch the Bus Festival will take place Saturday,
Mar. 29. It will feature a basketball tournament, barbecue competition and plenty of events for children.
