Meridian, Miss. Meridian police officers are stepping up their efforts to protect shoppers this holiday season.
Mayor Percy Bland tells Newscenter 11 he has ordered police chief James Lee to have all hands on deck for the next few weeks. Officers will be patrolling shopping centers and parking lots heavily in order to prevent crime. Mayor Bland says people in surrounding areas should feel safe coming to Meridian to shop.
"As I've said in the past, our new quadrant system that Chief Lee has instituted under my direction is working," Bland says. "And our crime numbers are down. Our reporting of crime numbers is down. Our number of calls is down."
Police say shoppers should report any suspicious activity to authorities immediately.
