For the second time in less than two weeks, a robbery occurred at the Bonita Walmart. In this case, a female with her young child was approached in the parking lot by a Hispanic Male with a knife who took her purse. Captain Dean Harper with the Meridian Police says that they're doing everything they can to find the suspect.
"We are reviewing the surveillance tape from Walmart, and also some more evidence that has come to light."
Earlier this month a black male robbed the Murphy Gas station there at about 9:00 PM. In both cases there were plenty of people around that could have potentially been witnesses, and that, Harper says, is actually just what these criminals want.
"If it was a lonely stretch of road, it's going to be hard for someone to escape into the crowd, but in this circumstance with it being at night, in both incidences, they were able to escape basically into the crowd and disappear."
While the number of armed robberies is down significantly from it's peak during the winter, Harper says that their call volume is about the same, but that's a good thing.
"We've had an excess of people calling us and reporting suspicious behavior, which we always appreciate since we can't be everywhere at one time. No one could say how many crimes have been prevented because of these preventative phone calls we have received."
