Meridian, Miss. The Meridian Police Department has spent Friday following up on several leads surrounding the shooting death of one woman. A man was also injured after being shot.
MPD says 19-year old Dereca Ramsey is the woman who died from that shooting on 6th Avenue on Thursday morning. The male shooting victim is in stable condition at UMC in Jackson, but police are not releasing his name.
"Following all the leads and putting all the pieces together," Lt. John Griffith says. "Right now, that's where we're at is just trying to put all the pieces in place to get the clear picture on what happened."
Griffith says detectives have been collecting witness statements and sending evidence to the crime lab. Lt. Griffith says detectives have not been able to determine exactly who fired those deadly gunshots on Thursday.
"Still looking at it at the possibility of it being a domestic situation, but we just haven't been able to put all the pieces together yet, to really confirm that," he explains.
Griffith says numbers show that many domestic situations result in death if they are not addressed quickly and effectively.
"You know, it starts out at one level and if it's not confronted before it reaches the extreme level, a lot of them do end up in death," Griffith points out.
Griffith tells us an autopsy will be performed on Ramsey within the next couple of days and that should hopefully help detectives with their investigation.
