MPD Gets A/C

An air conditioning unit was installed Thursday at the Meridian Police Department. It's on loan from Pike County.

Officials say it's a temporary solution to the sweltering heat for those who work inside the building.

The original plan was to replace the current police department space, rather than sink money into the deteriorated facility. But getting into a renovated building on 22nd Avenue faces an uncertain future.

"It's amazing since this hit the news, we've had multiple people throughout the city come to our aid and say, hey, we've got portable units. We've got this and we've got that, to try to assist you in some way," said Chief Lee Shelbourn. "People understand and we appreciate their concern. We appreciate their help. But we're going to make it. We're going to be all right. We're going to get this temporary thing done. And again, we're looking forward to moving in the new office after the first of the year maybe."

The renovation of the former Cowboy Maloney property on 22nd Avenue has been stalled for months, as the developer apparently awaits financing.
