MPSD Registration

The start of the new school year is just weeks away and early indications are that there will be fewer students in the Meridian Public School District.

This school year, district officials say they are taking a more 'community friendly' approach to registration and not requiring every student to go through the process.

'Only the students that are coming in brand new to the district or to a building (campus) will have to register. So, hopefully this will be something exciting for the community,' says Meridian High School Principal, Victor Hubbard.

Aside from being more 'community friendly' with registration, district officials say they started purging the rolls last year. Superintendent Dr. Alvin Taylor says this is playing a significant factor in the decrease in students.

'Where our attendance when we started around the beginning of the year was around 6,200, we're around 6,100 now,' says Taylor. 'Some of that is for students transferring out or leaving the state, but the majority of that is from cleaning up the data because it had been a while since the records had been cleaned."

Despite an overall slight drop in enrollment, Dr. Taylor says enrollment numbers are up at some schools within the district.

'We're seeing an increase in our elementary schools, in some of them and as the year goes on and people see the success that we're having we do anticipate our numbers to continue growing.'

Registration for new students ends Wednesday.

To register within the Meridian Public School District each student must supply his or her: birth certificate, social security card, immunization records and two proofs of residency. Utility bills that indicate the student's home address can be used as proof of residency.
