MTC Reacts to Hiring Practice Claims

Former corrections officials are still asking questions about the hiring, and firing practices, of Management and Training Corporation, that's the company that will start running the East Mississippi Correctional Facility this month.

Several applicants received letters during a training session saying they were no longer eligible for employment, and some believe that previous employment information was illegally obtained, and they've hired legal representation to look into the matter.

An MTC representative today denied those claims, saying they based their decisions strictly on typical background and reference checks.

"Why are they only excluding former GEO employees?" asks Sandra Williams,

"All [of the trainees] that walked out last Thursday was former GEO employees, with the same letter stating it was a background issue."

MTC could not confirm if all those who were terminated were former GEO employees, but again they deny any claim that confidential files from GEO were obtained.

They don't usually disclose to you the whole results of a background check. And, just using the same references, does not constitute a background check. These people are not telling the whole of it & are just seeking their 15 minutes in the spotlight. They know what they did, but don't want you to know. They're playing the victim. Such bogus complaints. The HR lady is a highly educated, respected, professional who is dedicated to her profession. These people have spoken about her in derogatory language. This is rude & unnecessary.

it wasnt about background checks that got them walked out. HR gave them a list with names on it and they started calling names and sending them out the door with a letter.

I don't understand why they are upset for one. If they did not put on the application that they were former employees of Geo EMCF then they lied on there application and it is grounds for termination.
For 2 they did hire back a lot of officers who had been walked out for many different reasons.
    3. not every one that reapplied were dirty officer but some officers did walk out or were no shows to work often like on payday Fridays, they were sleeping at work, or were not just doing their basic job
And assuming that Geo/EMCF gave them your files, people were questioning why so many former officers were being rehired and was asking MTC why did they hire certain people back. So Geo did not have to give them your files the community told on you!

The little children need to grow up. Mississippi is an at will employment state, as most republican states are. Youre not entitled to a job. If you are hired, you can be fired for any reason or no reason. Every article about the prison seems to end up with former workers acting like children. Name calling, mud slinging and talking acting like theyre lawyers. Look in the mirror guys and also read over some of your past comments, thats probably why you were let go in the first place. Its not professional or even adult like. Honestly, after reading all the previous workers comments, Im wondering if they werent the real problem to begin with and not management. Its like listening to a group of 10-12 year olds carry on.

Get Real People! This is a Maximum Security Prison. Of course the new owners will do a complete background check. Because I work in port authorities and refineries, I have drug screenings and background checks performed all the time. If you have nothing to hide, then running a background/drug screening should not be a problem. Based on the reaction, it is a good thing the new owners did a background check.

As I understand it. Mississippi is a right to work state and a company does not need a reason to fire you. They can just fire you. There must have been some problem with some staff/management at the correctional facility or GEO would not have been let go (fired).

Those people said background n previous employment as a reference check so dat means only one peeson had access to our records. A dog can figure dat out. if somebody background is clear n reason a job fire u and u ask them why n they say previous employment that means that previous employer went into details on why an individual was fired quit or resigned. against the law to do that. yes or no are the only answers dat should be given when contacting previous employers...just saying...

MTC has nothing to do with GEO. They are 2 separate companies in which the state bids contracts.. You do not have your facts right. Wackenhut was the 1st contractee, GEO was the 2nd, now it's MTC.
