Meridian Naval Air Station, Miss. A memorial to honor a local Marine was dedicated Friday at NAS Meridian.
An obstacle course was named in honor of CPL Sylvester Hood for his service as a Montford Point Marine, a segregated unit that trained at Montford Point, North Carolina, and served in World War II.
Hood's descendants were in attendance for the ceremony, and the guest speaker for the dedication was Capt. Tabitha Jones, Hood's granddaughter and also a Marine.
Jones was raised in Meridian.
"Honestly, I'm speechless," said Jones. "It is an honor because as a Marine myself I always wanted to be like my grandfather, who was one of the first African-American Marines. I never thought there would be a memorial, as in the obstacle course, named after him. But he is a man that deserves it, not because he was prideful but because he always wanted to do the right thing."
Ground was also broken for a more permanent memorial for CPL Hood.
