A Meridian man says he has been growing banana trees for more than 3 decades now.
Richard Cross says he has been growing bananas from a site on 48th Avenue and shipping them all over the country for 32 years now. Cross says he has been nicknamed the "Banana man." He says there is a science to getting the trees to bloom.
"There is no set time," Cross says. "You really have to manipulate them. By saying that, you have to dig them up in the fall, wintertime and put them back in the spring time. If you just leave them out in the frost, the cold will kill them. And you have to start back fresh. The reason mine is so big is I manipulate them."
Cross says he had about 5 or 6 bunches this year and that one was eatable.
