Meridian Marks Arbor Day

Meridian, Miss. The city of Meridian celebrated Arbor Day by planting trees Friday in front of city hall.

As a Tree City USA, Meridian is committed each year to managing tree growth and development in the city.

Senior planner Kevin Locke says it's essential to get future generations involved.

"One of the main things is to get the children involved," said Locke. "You saw we had the students from Poplar Springs today. They did a wonderful job for our program. We've got to bring the next generation. When we're talking trees, this willow back here is a three-generation tree."

After the ceremony, city officials gave away more than 250 fruit tree seedlings with the help of a donation by Apache Corporation.
