Meridian Mayor Cheri Barry confirmed Wednesday evening that Police Chief Lee Shelbourn will retire effective at the end of the month.

Barry says she spoke with Shelbourn late Wednesday afternoon, and says she will not race into making a hire for the job. She says Shelbourn will have a say in the search process.

"He has protected and served our community well for three years," said Barry Wednesday night, "he is going to be missed."

"He has been a fantastic leader for our Meridian Police Department."

Officials with MPD say that Shelbourn says the decision was prompted by his wish to spend more time with his family.

Shelbourn's retirement wraps up a law enforcement career that spanned 42 years, serving a number of agencies. He was hired as Meridian's Police Chief in September of 2009.

Meridians government, justice dept., and officials are corrupt and the rest of the State of MS knows it. I'm surprised a honest guy like Shelborne lasted as long as he did against the good ole boys.

Well guess the city got to be to much for you, we do have some crazy folks live here. But you can now move back to the big city of Petal and live a happy life with your wife and kids. You won't have to travel each week back and forward from Meridian to Petal and back to Meridian to work. I'm sure its been a bit hard on the family life. But I do think your work when you were here was good. Seems like to had to go back to Ptal alot and not really be here for the city. Good luck with the rest of your life.

Good Luck. Thank you for serving. I am sorry that ignorance rears it's head when given an opportunity. Most of the honest Citizens appreciate what you have tried to do. However, if you aren't part of the original "good ole boy" Power of MPD, then you aren't accepted. Maybe Meridian can get one of the current long time paid off corrupt officers as Chief. We'll see how that goes.

Name all the corruption, WOW. I can guarantee everything you spew out is fifth generation gossip. Most of you have no clue what it takes to run any kind of organization. Much less a flea bitten metropolis like Meridian. Get some ______ before you start commenting.

It's about time! But now the Mayor and her "puppet" CAO can run it the way they want! The corruption is unbelievable in this administration, they need to go. This is the most inept group of idiots we have ever had in office. They have done nothing for Meridian and promoted by friendship and campaign promises.

I just would hope and Pray that people would not go and think that putting Buck in would give them more on not getting Meridian clean and safe to live in for they would be making a BIG mistake and they would see crime go way up putting someone like Buck, in God help that people would pray about this and not make that step of making Meridian a unsafe place to be again and that is just what would happen just mark it down.

Maybe things will get back to normal once he finally leaves...He's been nothing but a YES man to the Mayor since he's been here. What good has he done? Crime is worst than its ever been...the police dept. is in worst shape than its ever been...I just wonder how he got here in the first place...rumor has it he was "Friends" with the Mayor (distant relations maybe) The sooner he leaves the better!
