Merry Meridian Offers Lots to Do

the weekend was merry all around Meridian, with lots of holiday activities.

The annual Christmas parade packed downtown streets Saturday. But it was just one of several big events that drew lots of people. Local officials say it proved there is a lot to do here.

"The old myth that you hear people say, 'there's nothing to do around Meridian', when you look at that schedule, that's just totally disproved," said John McClure, executive director of Meridian Main Street. "And it's because we are a community that cares. We have people who pitch in and work together."

All of the events hosted in downtown Meridian do not put themselves together. It takes hundreds of man hours to prepare sites, get the word out, and of course, man the different activities. All of these workers are volunteers, which make Merry Meridian possible.

"There's just not enough money, in both the private and public sectors, to pay for things we need to do to elevate what we have that is attractive," said Kenny Watts, board president of Meridian Main Street. "We take it for granted so often, and without volunteers helping raise the awareness, or renew the awareness, of how attractive our downtown is, things wouldn't happen."

The volunteers who make Merry Meridian possible all have one thing in common, a love for downtown.

"I love all the activities they do; I love the dedication of the people that do help, and they make it easy to help," said Debby Delshad, a volunteer with Meridian Main Street. "It's clear, you know, what they need done, and they welcome the help from anyone that has the time or energy to come help them. So I love it. I love downtown."
