The Mississippi Senate has revealed its own redistricting plan.

It includes 15 majority-black districts in the 52-seat chamber, including a new one in the Hattiesburg-Laurel area. That is up from the 12 majority-black districts drawn a decade ago.

The plan reduces the number of split precincts from 129 statewide to 14.

It also includes a new district in fast-growing DeSoto County, just south of Memphis, Tenn.

To draw the new DeSoto district, it combines the districts of two incumbent white Democrats in north Mississippi, Bill Stone of Ashland and Nickey Browning of Pontotoc.

Legislative districts must be updated every 10 years to account for population changes revealed by the Census.

The plan was revealed late Tuesday afternoon. The full Senate is expected to vote on the map Wednesday.
