The Mississippi Department of Public Safety says there were no fatalities on highways covered by the
Highway Patrol during the long Memorial Day holiday.
The holiday period ran from 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Monday.
Master Sgt. Johnny Poulos says state troopers investigated 101 accidents during the period with 35 injuries reported. The state counts only fatalities on highways patrolled by state troopers.
Poulos says troopers made 216 DUI-related arrests and issued 975 tickets for seat belt violations.
There were nine reported traffic deaths during the 2011 holiday period.
The Highway Patrol says it used federal grants to beef up patrols for its "Click It or Ticket" campaign, which Poulos says contributed to the reduction in fatalities.
