Mississippi Executions Being Questioned

The Mississippi Supreme Court has on its docket an appeal by two groups challenging how Mississippi conducts its executions.

The lawsuit by two anti-death penalty organizations was filed last year on behalf of three inmates. Two of the three have been executed. Oral arguments have not been scheduled.

Mississippians Educating for Smart Justice and Mississippi Cure Inc. sued the state, hoping to stop the executions because the state switching to a different lethal injection drug. They said corrections officials failed to properly publicize the change as required by the Administrative Procedures Act.

In April of 2011, Hinds County Circuit Judge Bill Gowan rejected the challenge. The Supreme Court then denied a request to stop the scheduled executions while the groups appealed.

It's a shame the death penalty isn't in effect nationwide. How is it "cruel and unusual punishment" considering the horror these criminals put their victims through?

I question the use of the death penalty as a deterrent. People still kill each other, after all.

It isn't a deterrent. It is cruel and unusual punishment, particularly with the overwhelming number of innocent people being exonerated from death row.

Since these groups are concerned with the change in lethal drugs, perhaps we should change the method to be the same one the one on death row killed their victims. That would obviously be more humane since the loss of life of the victim is acceptable to the groups.
