The shooting happened shortly after midnight Friday morning in the 3100 block of Railroad Street.

Mike Vick, information officer for the Meridian Police Department, identified the victim as 33-year-old Omar Gowdy.

According to Vick, Gowdy was getting out of his car in his driveway when he was approached by three to four black men wearing hoods. Vick says a confrontation occurred between the men and Gowdy was shot.

Investigators were able to talk to Gowdy before he died; an investigation is ongoing in the case.

Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler confirmed Friday afternoon that the victim died of a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Omar Gowdy is the nicest, sweetest, most generous, kind spirited, hard working FATHER I have ever met. He mows my Granny's grass trims her bushes. He also takes care of the church lawn. He does such a great job they pay him more then what he ask for. He would always take the amount he asked for and he would give tha extra to my Granny and tell her you take this buy yourself some lunch or something. Omar took take his boys with him to help him cut grass. He taught them how to make an honest living. He spent time with his kids he picked them up from school. Omar is a fantastic FATHER, SON, BROTHER, UNCLE and FRIEND. I told him i was looking to buy a car he didnt hesitate to drive me 2 hours to a car auction in Columbus were purchase my first vehicle. That's a good friend. My daughters and I saw Omar at tha store one day she jumped out her carseat and said Omar!!! He came to tha car and spoke to us after he left my baby said "Ma That's My Good FRIEND OMAR". I Thank God for lending my family an angel. My prayers are with his family as well as mine!! U Will Always Be Loved and Forever Missed ~~~~Archie Daniels & Omar Gowdy~~~~

I have not read all these postings about Omar but I will be the frist to say to anyone that I have never had a problem with Omar. He has had his problems in the past but he has never disrepected me or anyone that I know of. Everyone on here posting what the feel but do you now have something in your closet that someone can not pull out???? We all have those hidden things in the past but we out grew them and I would hope that Omar had done the same thing. If he had not,,,,,, that does not mean that anyone should have came up and took his life as was done. Why would it take 3 or 4 ____ ___ _______ to do it??? I see a bunch of weak people to do that and that is not right. what ever happened to good ole boy fighting??????

Psalm 23....The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.... My prayers goes out to everyone on here and the grieving family.

@ onemansopinion..... FYI I am not a drug dealer .. I go to work everyday just like the other 65% of americans whom are lucky enough to still have a job in this economy. I am simply stating that when times are hard good people make bad decisions, doesn't make them bad people, it just means they aren't perfect. To all the people who have something negative to say about this young man remember your bible says; Judge not and ye shall not be judged, while we're on this note; Let he is without sin cast the first stone. This family needs our prayers not our critism..... God Bless and have a great day.

well people talk, and alot of people dont need to....we cant judge NOBODY,not even OMAR.he was one of many who changed there life after he did his time for the wrong he did,and for those who was courious to know,HE DID GO TO CHURCH,and he did teach encourage his kids to be right,,i can speak on that, because my lil nephew OMAR SHARIF GOWDYjr.was dearly loved by his father,he never lead him in a wrong direction,,,,,so some of these people need to stop being quick to assume things about OMAR,he was probably a better father than some of these guys who posting this negativity...people pray, and instead of talking about whay he didin the past, pray for his kids and familys future.........and ill pray for all of you devils......

for all those that are talking bad about this man you should be ashamed of yourself. talking about "did he get his life right?" yeah you may go to church and read your bible but you are going against GOD himself. he is the one and only judge. it hurts the family when you talk about one of there love ones. if something like this happens to you i hope they dont treat you and talk to you just like you did them. hurt and pain is whats going through this family not only because a loved one was gunned down but all of you with your negative remarks. even though i never met him he seemed to be a better person than you.
