Meridian, Miss. Mississippi's annual sales tax holiday started at midnight and will continue until midnight Saturday.
Shoppers may buy most clothing and footwear items that are under $100 without having to pay the 7 percent state sales tax.
Several stores around the area have special sales to help attract shoppers during the tax free weekend.
Staff at Bonita Lakes Mall said they have seen increased activity.
"As the day has progressed, I've seen a lot more business coming in," said Belk store manager Tina crouch. "And I think tomorrow is really when we are going to see the most business."
The mall is open for extended hours Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. The break on the sales tax also applies to other retail stores.
