Officer Assault Arrest

The incident happened during the evening hours on April 18th. That's when police were called to respond to a family disturbance along St. Paul Street.

'During the sorting out of who did what and who said what, this assault occurred,' says Meridian Police Department spokesman, Mike Vick. 'Our officer did receive medical treatment. However, he's fine now and back at work.'

After the officer as assaulted, investigators say the suspect got away. However, Ladarius Dewayne Rush was taken into custody this week. He's now being charged with a felony.

'Anytime you assault a police officer it's a felony,' says Vick.

Investigators say the officer's injuries were not life threatening. However, Vick says the fact that an officer was even hurt while responding, proves that domestic violence calls are some of the most dangerous for police.

"Because regardless of what happens when we get there, especially with the current law, if there's any sign of physical violence then we are required to make an arrest. So, it's automatic that somebody's not going to be happy with us."

Bond for the 21-year-old suspect in this case has now been set at $50,000.
