Authorities say a police officer and a suspect have died after a shooting that also injured two other
officers while serving a search warrant in central Mississippi.

The shooting happened Tuesday at the Colony Park Apartments in Pearl.

University of Mississippi Medical Center spokesman Jack Mazurak said one of the officers died at 11:56 a.m.

Rankin County District Attorney Michael Guest identified the slain officer as Mike Walter. He was shot in the head.

Mazurak said the two other officers were in good condition. Their identities have not been released.

Guest said the officers were serving a warrant in a molestation case when Carnell Gaines, Jr., shot them. One of the officers returned fire, killing Gaines.

Walter, 32, is survived by his wife Jeanne and their 11-year-old daughter, Bailey, and his parents, John and Judy Walter of San Diego, California.

According to a bio released by the Pearl Police Dept., Walter's interests outside his family and work were the San Diego Chargers, professional baseball and law enforcement. He played professional baseball for the Houston Astros organization from 1993-2000.

Walter was hired by the Pearl Police Department in February of 2009 as a patrol officer.

Pearl police say Investigator Dave McCarley was shot in the hand and leg during the same incident. His wounds are considered serious, with surgery and extensive rehab most likely to be needed. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigator Shaun Terwilliger received injuries to his forearm, not firearm-related, and was treated and released.
