Officials Discuss Paving Project Plans

The current list for proposed paving consists of dozens of Meridian streets. However, most are in or near the core of the city. Public Works Director Monty Jackson says a system was used to determine what streets were placed on the list.

"So, we ranked the streets:1,2 and 3," Jackson explains. "Presented the list back to the council with the 1's being the ones we thought were the worse, the 2's next and the 3's the last on the list."

The total bond for the project is for $4.5 million. Because there are many needs, but not enough money to meet them, Jackson says each of the five council members will have roughly $700,000 of that money that can be used to improve streets within their wards. Next up for the council is to whittle down the proposed paving list.

"We prioritized them into level 1, 2, and 3," City Council President George Thomas says. "We'll try to do the level ones, as many as we can. One thing we're looking at is do we need to treat the commercial streets, the downtown streets as priority one and then get the residential streets."

Council members are expected to vote on a final list for streets to be paved at their first meeting in August.
