Paving Project

The Meridian City Council is proposing dozens of streets for the paving project. The majority of the streets named are near the center of the city.

One of those is behind the hospitals; it's 19th Street. That's where I caught up with residents and motorists who welcome the work.

''It's needed because it's rough on the tires and shocks and things like that,' says Alton Wilson.

'The road is real raggedy. All over here the road is real raggedy,' says Jeremiah Stevens.

'It's a lot of potholes and uneven roads. It's a lot of wear and tear on your car, and I would appreciate it if they would just get it fixed,' says Adrienne McDaniel.

Although a portion of 19th Street is proposed for repaving, it's still unknown if that will actually happen.

Next up for the city council is to further reduce the number of streets proposed for the project.

'The bond issue for the paving is for $4.5 million,' says Meridian Public Works Director, Monty Jackson. 'There are some other expenses that have got to come out of that and we've recommended that they (council members) try to identify $700,000 worth of paving in each one of their wards.'

'We have approximately $4.5 million to work with. To do all the streets it would probably take well over $10 million to do all of them. So, we'll do the ones we can do,' says newly elected Meridian City Council President, George Thomas.

City council members are expected to officially approve a final list of streets for the paving project at their first meeting in August. After that, council president George Thomas says bids will be taken to do the work. He's hopeful that actual work on the paving project will start anywhere from two to three weeks after the bids are taken. Once the work starts, he says it's unknown how long it will take to finish.
