Update: Meridian police said Tuesday evening that a suspect was taken into custody in connection with the armed robbery of the Cefco on Highway 39 North in Meridian.
Kadarryus Gordon, 18, of 2520 Grandview Avenue, was charged. His bond was set at $50,000.
(The original story about the armed robbery appears below.)
The armed robbery happened around 3:30 a.m. at Cefco, 2330 Highway 39 North.
The surveillance video offers a chilling account of what happened. The cashier looks to his right and sees the robber running up to the store. The cashier darts to a nearby closet, locking himself in.
After firing shots, the suspect helps himself to the register, taking the whole thing with him as he flees the store. During the incident a customer remained hidden by ducking behind shelves.
The Meridian Police Department is at this point looking at the possibility that the armed robbery at this Cefco, and those at several local liquor stores, are actually connected. Officials say there are too many similarities to ignore.
"There are similarities, similarities in description," said public information officer, Mike Vick. "Our investigators are exploring the possibility that this is the same person. It is not definitive yet."
"And there is a possibility the robber isn't working alone. Other people have been seen as sort of lookouts and that sort of thing, at The Cork Screw, at Cloverleaf, and possibly here, too," said Vick.
Vick says the department wants to catch this person or people to stop what has become an almost weekly occurrence. He says someone will eventually recognize the robber.
"There are some distinctive things, the markings on the backs of the gloves that he has on, the tennis shoes are fairly distinctive," Vick said. "Someone might recognize something from body language or build or something he is wearing."
Anyone who may have information about this crime or any others in the city is asked to call Crimestoppers at 601-485-1860.
