Primary Runoffs Fueled by Local Races

In Lauderdale County, runoffs were held Tuesday for county supervisor and tax assessor.

The District 5 supervisor's race pitted longtime incumbent Ray Boswell, sometimes a controversial figure, against local educator Kyle Rutledge. Boswell received the most votes in the first primary, but Rutledge was not far behind.

Poll workers in District 5 reported a steady stream of voters.

"We understand from people commenting that in Districts 1 and 5, the supervisor's races, is an interest in bringing people to the polls," said Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson.

But some voters told Newscenter 11 they are just as concerned about other races on the ballot.

"I think they're all important," said one man. "And we need to do our best to do our part in the government, to be patriotic, and do what we're supposed to do."

"I like to vote for somebody," said one woman. "I couldn't complain if i didn't vote."

Newscenter 11 also stopped by other polls in Lauderdale County as voters cast their ballots. Johnson tells us there were no major problems that prevented people from voting.

"There was one precinct that was having issues," said Johnson. "And the poll workers are trained that, if there is an issue, to offer the voter a paper ballot until the problem can be resolved."

Johnson said the good news is that voters have shown up to all of the county's voting precincts.

"We've had a couple of runoff elections in the last three years that the turnout was really, really so poor. We had some precincts that no one voted or we maybe had precincts where one or two voted," Johnson said. "So this time, I think all 52 precincts will have people voting in all locations."

The Republican runoff featured the tax assessor's race between incumbent Jimmy Slay and opponent James Rainey, and the District 1 supervisor's race between incumbent Hank Florey, and former supervisor Eddie Harper.
