The kind of cold being experienced in Mississippi and Alabama this week is out of the ordinary, even for winter.
With the possibility of record-breaking cold, the possibility of damage to your home is a real danger. Pipes can freeze and burst. Prevention is better than reacting to the damage.
"Beyond the damaged pipe, would be the damage from the water itself, whether it be ruining carpet, whether it be ruining the base boards or any type of wood structure in the room," said Colby Calcote of The Service Company. "Like I said, not to mention the expense you're going to incur just from repairing the pipe itself which can be very costly."
Calcote says it's probably too late to insulate pipes at this point, but letting your faucets run, not just drip, can help prevent them from freezing.
