The Mississippi Secretary of State's office says it has ordered an unregistered charity in Rankin County to stop soliciting donations.
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says in a news release that Bit by Bit Equine, run by Stephanie Barnes Wilson of Brandon, has been soliciting funds without being registered.
State law requires any charity soliciting funds in Mississippi to register or file an exemption with the Secretary of State's office.
Hosemann says that despite repeated notices, the charity never filed the proper documents to solicit funds and continued to do so in violation of state law.
Hosemann says the Secretary of State's Office imposed penalty of $1,000 against the charity and has ordered it to cease and desist soliciting funds.
Wilson did not immediately respond to a phone message Friday.
