The weather Friday in the twin states was about as good as it gets, but as the summer rolls on, folks in our area know that one storm coming north from the Gulf can turn the weather around in a hurry.

"We've already had two named storms which may bode for an active season," says John Baxter with the National Weather Service, "although the National Weather Service is predicting an average year for hurricanes."

The most recognizable name is Katrina when it comes to storms affecting our area.

100 miles per hour winds reached north of I-20 as that hurricane barreled through in 2005.

Baxter says now is the time to get ready, and he says the best way to think of storm preparedness is to prepare for an event like Katrina, and hope for nothing.

"Be prepared to go 8 or 9 days without electricity," says Baxter, "and to be isolated 2-3 days."
