Meridian, Miss. The Red Cross of East Central Mississippi hosted a disaster training seminar for small businesses.
The seminar helped to give businesses the tools and resources they need to develop an emergency response plan so they can be ready for disasters.
One part of the seminar was the Red Cross' Ready Rating web-based program, which shows businesses the gaps in their disaster plan.
Statistics indicate 40% of business fail following a disaster because they do not have a plan in place.
"This will help them develop a plan that they can put in place," said Linda Lauderdale of the Red Cross. "The faster our business can be up and open following a disaster, the better it is for the economy, and the better it is for the total recovery of our community."
Officials say plans for businesses are important because of our proximity to several different types of disasters.
