Relay Names Honorary Chairs

With Relay for Life just over a month away, organizers today named the Honorary Chairs for Relay and announced some awards the Lauderdale County Relay has received. Lauderdale County's Relay for Life is ranked 8th in the Mid-South Division and 10th in the nation in per capita contributions. Those contributions make it possible to honor those who have survived cancer.

Cathy Raley, survivor-ship chairperson, explains, "The community is what makes Relay. They come out, and the support that they give us is amazing. They donate things to make the reception that we have for the survivors amazing. We don't ever pay for anything; the community donates everything that we do."

For survivors and honorary chairs Wink and Linelle Glover, Relay is a way to give back and support one another. Both have had cancer, and both attribute their survival to people they met at Relay.

Wink Glover, an honorary chair and cancer survivor, tells us, "It's such an exciting thing to be a part of, and it's great to be a part of something that is providing money to improve research and that kind of thing for the comfort of the patients who unfortunately have cancer."

"I think the most important thing in my life with cancer were all the caregivers," says Linelle Glover, one of the honorary chairs, "not only my husband and my family, but my friends, and I think that is one thing that Relay has done for us."

A new program to help meet fundraising goals this year is employee deduction that makes it easier to donate to Relay.

Tripp Ward, the event chair for Relay, says, "It's just like any other employee deduction program you do. The contributions that your employees give, they give credit to your team as well as your team totals, and it stays here in Lauderdale County."

The survivors reception will be held April 28 with the Relay on May 3.
