Residents Speak Out to Board

Residents of Kewanee Church Road attended the Lauderdale County board of supervisors meeting Monday to discuss their concerns and displeasure about construction on the road.

Many of the residents say there are other problems in the county on which taxpayer dollars could be better spent and that this road is fine as is.

District 2 supervisor Wayman Newell says the road needs to be fixed to prevent an accident from occurring.

At issue is a curve in the road. The residents say the $55,000 to $65,000 the county will spend just on materials to straighten the road could be used elsewhere in the county, and a cheaper fix is possible.

"Instead of straightening the curve out, we propose you post a speed limit in the curve, post signs," said resident Donald Jones.

The road has a 40 degree curve, which is about 15 degrees more than most roads in the county. Now county officials are hoping that by moving this road to the west, they will eliminate and flatten the curve. However, local residents say that this move is not needed.

"The land owner gave the land to the county," said District 2 supervisor Wayman Newell. "The potential is there for an accident. One hasn't happened but there have been three accidents on that road somewhere."

"Before you get here, you're coming down a steep curve and a sharper curve than this, which is more of a safety issue than this curve," said school bus driver Cynthia Walker. "If you travel this road on past here, there's another curve equally as steep as this one. You can see completely around this curve. There are not that many trees on this road now. It has been clear cut."

The supervisors voted to look into the matter. Supervisors Hank Florey and Josh Todd will examine the road and report back to the board for its next work session May 17. No formal action will be taken until at least the next board meeting
May 21.
