Meridian, Miss. Meridian police filed charges against a suspect in the rape of a 13-year-old girl late Thursday.
30-year-old Jafron L. Roberts of Meridian is charged with kidnapping, rape, receiving stolen property and disposal of stolen property..
The kidnapping and rape allegedly happened Tuesday morning. The teenage victim was walking to school on the east side of town.
Roberts was in custody within hours but formal charges weren't filed until Thursday.
Police Chief James Lee says both his police team and the Wesley House played a huge role in Roberts' quick apprehension.
"This would not have been possible if we had not formed partnerships all over the city with people like the Wesley House, who we'd love to thank with their cooperation in victim assistance," said Lee. "Our police department, our detective's department and our patrol division. I am recommending personally to the mayor that he give them citations for their efforts and a great job policing."
Roberts' bond was set at $50,000 for receiving stolen property, $50,000 for disposal of stolen property, and $350,000 for rape. He was denied bond on the kidnapping charge.
The Wesley House has a crisis response team in place that offers services such as forensic interviews and therapy sessions for victims of sexual assault. The team was able to assist the victim in this case and others who have been victimized.
