Sales Tax Weekend

The annual tradition of sales tax-free weekend is often a shot in the arm to local retailers in bringing added revenue prior to the holiday shopping season. Retailers have extended hours to try and allow as many people as possible to come in and benefit from the savings. In fact, this weekend is now so much apart of many people's shopping habits that it goes toe-to-toe with several major holiday weekends.

"I think as tax free has come on-board in the state of Mississippi, we've only done it a few years, that it has grown," Dennis Hall, store manager at Belk at Bonita Lakes Mall tells us. "Customers understand it, and they wait for this weekend. Our business during the week has been a little bit slow knowing that the customers are waiting for this weekend."

Not only are the retail stores benefiting from the extra revenue coming in this weekend, but customers are also seeing a few extra dollars in their pockets.

Algene Hearn, who was shopping with his grand and great-grand-kids says, "To me, it's a lot of help if you've got a lot of kids in your family. See, I got a lot of grand-kids, great-grand-kids, don't have a lot of money, so it's a big help to me, and I think it should be a big help to everyone."

Christi Allen, who was shopping with her son at The Liberty Shop, tells us that she isn't directly benefiting from the savings. "Well actually his grandmama is buying them for him, so she gets to save the extra money than me. She helps them out a lot and gets their school stuff." Allen tells us that their grandmother will be buying lunch for them with the money saved.

Tax free weekend ends at midnight Sunday.
