Southern Pine Electric Power Association says it has received reports of telephone scams being directed at its members.
Officials said there are variations of the scam, but all claim to have money from the federal government that will be used to pay the Southern Pine member’s electric bill.
In some cases the victim is asked to provide credit card information to cover a processing fee to Paymentus, an automated payment service. Once the thief has that information he is able to make charges on the account.
"This is just one example of the telephone scams Southern Pine members are reporting," said Donald L. Jordan, general manager. "We ask our members and the public to not give any personal or banking information over the phone to someone you don’t know. This also includes your Social Security number."
In addition to Southern Pine, other electric power cooperatives in South Mississippi have reported similar telephone scams in their service areas.
