Lauderdale County, Miss. Social media, including sites like Facebook and Twitter, can be great for keeping up with friends and family, but it also can be very dangerous.
For the second time in just as many weeks, the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department has arrested an adult accused of a sex crime with a minor.
They arrested Kenneth Wallace July 19th for internet luring, and now 24-year-old Jeremy Williams is in the Lauderdale County Detention Facility following an investigation, thanks to the diligence of a 13-year-old's parents.
"We had a parent who was taking the time and concern to monitor their child's social media. The information was discovered by the parent while inquiring into their child's communication with an adult male," said Sheriff Billy Sollie. "That information was brought to the Sheriff's Department, given to investigators, and then the investigation concluded today with the arrest."
Williams is facing 2 counts of sexual battery and 1 count of statutory rape, which all together carries a $60,000 bond.
Sollie says it's very important for parents to continuously monitor their children's social media use.
"We encourage the parents to be involved in their children's interactions through social media, be it Facebook, be it texting, etc.." said Sollie. "A parent's involvement can oftentimes stop a bad situation from getting worse."
