Shooting Death

An investigation is underway into a shooting late Tuesday in Meridian.

Meridian Police Chief James Reed says Jadarrian Jimerson was walking near 10th Avenue and 29th Street around 11 p.m. Tuesday when he was shot by suspects who were traveling in what was described as a Buick Roadmaster. The weapon is believed to be an automatic rifle.

"Three individuals got out of the Roadmaster, walked up to the victim while cursing him and shot him, shot him in the leg and that put him down. One of the individuals walked up to him and shot him in the head," Reed said.

The trio then fled. Jimerson died at the scene.

Reed says it's too early to determine whether or not the fatal shooting is connected to a shooting that happened just an hour earlier.

"We have not established a connection at this time," the chief said. "Certainly we're looking into that. We don't have any suspects at this time. We have witnesses that we're interviewing and we hope those witness interviews will lead us to a suspect."

Despite the four recent incidents involving gunfire over the last two days in Meridian, one disabled resident who lives near this location told Newscenter 11 he still feels safe. Chief Reed says residents should feel that way. .

"Certainly, we're beefing up patrols in that area. We are also utilizing our DART team to also help patrol that area," Reed said. "We are doing everything that we can to ensure the safety and integrity of the citizens of Meridian."
