Shooting at Newton High School

Updated: Sat 1:35 AM, Sep 22, 2012

A spokesman for the Newton Municipal School District says a student shot himself Friday afternoon at the high school campus.

District spokesman Larry Gressett said the student was still alive after it happened and was transported to a hospital.

Additional information gathered through the Newscenter 11 crew on the scene is that the 17-year-old male student pulled out a gun and a cigarette while in class.

At that point, the teacher evacuated the other students from the room and the campus was locked down. Later a shot was heard.

Newton High School's football game against West Lauderdale, originally scheduled for Friday night, has been postponed.

Counselors will be made available Monday for students and staff.
