Sollie on Jail Overcrowding

Lauderdale County, Miss. Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie says it's yet to be seen how a new law will affect the county jail population, but it's time for the county to be proactive.

Sheriff Sollie discussed the issue with other elected officials at Monday's Council of Governments meeting.

House Bill 585 became law July 1. It's designed to avert state prison population growth, but sheriffs around the state are concerned it will cause county jail populations to soar.

"We anticipate serious conversations starting in the near future for a second large location to house the criminal element here in Meridian and Lauderdale County," said Sollie.

The sheriff says the state just picked up some of its inmates from Lauderdale County, so there is a little relief right now. But he says the number of inmates will increase dramatically during the next court session later this month.
