Mississippi lawmakers filed agreements Monday on several measures where they have worked out differences between competing House and Senate versions.
Third graders would have to prove they could read at a basic level to advance to fourth grade under Senate Bill 2347.
Elected superintendents in school districts with fewer than 1,800 students would become appointed after 2016 unless voters petition for and vote in a referendum to keep the post elected.
Also, the state would create a preschool program that would serve 1,325 students in its first year.
