This fall, Downtown Meridian will add a new restaurant to its growing list of places to eat, a Subway to be exact. The Lisi Family currently owns 9 of them throughout the city, and they're excited about their 10th location.
"We have been looking to come downtown for probably about a year and a half to two years. We've been looking at different locations and this one just happened to come available at the right time for us."
That location is the old Cater's Cafe across from Dumont Plaza. Construction is underway, and the old interior is in the process of being ripped out. If everything goes according to schedule, Lisi says they hope to be open for business in the next few months.
"Construction started about 4 weeks ago, and we're hoping that construction will end and we'll be able to serve some customers hopefully in the middle to the end of October."
The Meridian Main Street Association is glad to see the addition of the Subway downtown, and they say it's the first chain restaurant that's come to the area in a long time.
"Probably the last chain eating establishment we had was when there was a lunch counter at either Woolworth's, Cress's, or The Newberry, and that was 45 years ago."
With the additions of places like Brickhouse and the new Weidmann's, McClure believes that the area is back on its way up.
"Over the last 3 years, we have been particularly successful, and have been aggressively working towards the revitalization of downtown; promoting a positive attitude about the downtown."
