Some local children who might not otherwise have all their school supplies got a big boost from the United Way of East Mississippi. It delivered supplies collected during its Stuff the Buss campaign to schools Friday.
"It's huge for the children," said Sara Carmichael of The United Way. "A lot of them come to school without the necessary tools and uniforms they need to start the year off right. So this is very big for them. But it's also just as big for the teachers, who a lot of the times spend money out of their pocket to buy these things for the children and the classrooms that don't come equipped."
Carmichael says it's just as important for the schools and their principals, to show them that the community is behind them in the efforts to try to make a difference for kids.
"When looking at the percentages of children in our community on free and reduced rate lunches in our school systems, it's close to seventy and eighty percent in some cases in almost every city and county elementary school across the board," Carmichael said.
