The top Democrat on the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee is seeking a federal probe of a
Mississippi prison riot that left one guard dead and 20 people injured.
U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi says the riot at Adams County Correctional Facility is "troubling and brings into question the effectiveness of privately owned and operated prison facilities."
Thompson has asked the FBI and Department of Homeland Security to investigate.
The riot began Sunday afternoon and lasted into the night.
The prison, run by Corrections Corporation of America, holds nearly 2,500 low-security federal inmates.
Most are serving time for coming back to the United States after being deported.
