Tornado Count Reaches 10

The National Weather Service now counts 10 tornadoes in Mississippi from storms Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Surveyors continued examining damage Friday. At least seven people were injured in the storms, though no injuries were life-threatening.

The biggest twister traveled 16 miles from Scott County into Newton County east of Jackson. With a half-mile-wide path, it was rated EF-3 on the Fujita scale, with peak winds estimated at 140 mph.

The second-strongest storm had top winds of 125 mph, running 7 miles from Sharkey County into Humphreys County.

Eight shorter-lived tornadoes included two in Leake County near Carthage, one in Neshoba County near Bethsaida, one in Bolivar County near Shelby, one in Grenada County near Grenada, one in Yazoo County northeast of Benton and two in Humphreys County near Louise.
