A volunteer in our area who has been helping the needy for years was honored this evening.

Trey Long, the founder of 1 John 3:17, was honored by the Knights of Columbus.

Long received the Monsignor John J. Burns award Saturday, which is given annually to an outstanding volunteer in our area.

The Council also presented Long with $1,000 to go toward his ministry which has helped hundreds in our area.

"I really enjoyed just getting back to really what matters in life, that material things are not it, says Long, "so tonight was a good night to concentrate on what matters the most, and that's other people."

If you would like more information on 1 John 3:17, you can log onto the group's Facebook page. Long also speaks about community needs every Monday on WMOX radio, and he writes a weekly article in the Meridian Star.

The 1st John 3:17 ministry is what Christian benevolence is all about. This should be a model in each and every city, to give a hand UP to those who are really in need and help them get back on their feet. It's been exciting to watch this ministry grow.

Trey Long may do some good works, but Trey Long definitely has an attitude which is rather supercilious. When I called him to give him some information that I thought might be helpful in his endeavors, I was told that "it wouldn't work", and that he didn't need any advice or information from me. Know one thing for sure, I will never call him again----

What? You don't think he would do this to wear on his sleeve, do you? Please say it isn't so. Well, true philanthropists like to remain anonymous.
