University of Southern Mississippi President Martha Saunders is stepping down from the post she has
held since 2007.
Saunders said at a news conference in Hattiesburg Friday that she will return to teaching and join the faculty at the USM Gulf Coast campus in Long Beach.
Her resignation is effective June 30.
Saunders says she felt no pressure to resign but thought the timing was best to return to teaching.
Saunders says she is leaving the university in good financial shape.
Saunders is a USM graduate and the university's first female president. She came to the USM from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
She succeeded Shelby Thames.
Higher Education Commissioner Hank Bounds says the search for a new president will begin immediately.
